Solo Trip Essential: The Pre-Packed Toiletry Bag

Field Notes — I Swear By

I hate packing. So I built a system that means I barely have to.

I keep a full second set of toiletries, travel sized, packed and ready, completely separate from what I use at home. Not “grab it from the bathroom the night before.” A dedicated travel set that stays packed, always.

This matters even more solo. There's no one to ask for a spare hair tie or borrow a face wash from. What's in the bag is what you have.

What's actually in it
Skin and face
  • Disposable face towels, face wash, serums, toner, a few face masks, SPF, pimple patches
Oral care
  • Toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, floss
Health
  • Allergy pills, a few of any prescriptions, basic first aid items
Hair
  • Edge control, a brush, a hair pick, braid spray, plus whatever that trip's style needs, packed separately
Everything else
  • Nail clippers, tweezers, small scissors, razors, deodorant, body lotion, Vaseline, nail glue, lash glue, body wash, glasses cleaner
Yes, all of it. Sounds like a lot until you realize it's one bag, packed once, and you stop thinking about any of it.
How I store it
  • Two travel kits, sized for different items. Buying something functional and cute isn't just vanity, you treat a nice kit better, and you look more put together mid-trip than someone digging through a plastic bag for eye drops.
Keeping it stocked
  • I keep a running mental note of what's getting low, which I'm working on turning into an actual list instead of a vibe. Before every trip, I check the bag and restock whatever's close to empty. That's the whole system.
